Pictured opposite is an image of my avatar Gen Nicholls in a few of her many incarnations. Gen is curator of 'The Glass Box Gallery'. The Glass Box Gallery is a virtual gallery I created in 'Second Life', the mulitplayer online virtual world. This gallery enables me to establish a virtual presence within Second Life in order to research the creative and educational potential of this medium.
In Second Life we can present ourselves in any way that we desire. Avatars can take virtually any form and needn't necessarily even be human. As friendships and associations develop within the virtual world, this avatar may be the only way in which we are known to others. This has profound implications as regards issues of identity.
